Busan International Film Festival and Youku Announce the Master Directors for the Asia’s Masters and Newcomers Project
The Busan International Film Festival and Youku, China’s biggest video-sharing website, start the Asia’s Masters and Newcomers Project based on a MOU signed last year to discover and support talented young Asian filmmakers. Four master directors Apichatpong WEERASETHAKUL, IM Sang Soo, KAWASE Naomi, and Xiaoshuai WANG were confirmed to lead the project.
Leading the Way for Young Asian Directors
The Asian Collaboration Project will select four master and four newcomer directors to produce short films and will provide funding for one newcomer to make a feature length film. Three of the newcomers were selected by the Busan International Film Festival and one by Youku. Masters and newcomers will individually produce a short film, which will premiere at this year’s Busan International Film Festival. Youku will sponsor the production costs for both the short and feature films, while the Busan International Film Festival will select the directors and best film.
4 Master Directors Confirmed
IM Sang Soo, KAWASE Naomi, Xiaoshuai WANG, and Apichatpong WEERASETHAKUL were confirmed as master directors who will be coupled with newcomers to advise and mentor on the short film production process. One of the newcomer’s films will be selected by the master directors and the chief programmer of the Busan International Film Festival, to be sponsored by Youku as a feature production.
The confirmed newcomers include Youku selected CHENG Liang (China), 2009 Busan International Film Festival Asian Film Academy graduate Phuttiphong AROONPHENG (Thailand), 2014 graduate Asmita SHRISH (Nepal), and 2014 Busan International Film Festival Wide Angle Short Film competitive section nominee director LEE Han Jong.
Master Directors List (Alphabetical Order)
IM Sang Soo / Director, Korea
After a successful debut with Girls’ Night Out (1998), Director IM Sang Soon established his reputation through the works ofTears (2000), A Good Lawyer’s Wife (2003), The President’s Last Bang (2004), and The Old Garden (2007) that satirized problems found in Korean society. His remake of Director KIM Ki-young’s The Housemaid (1960) was invited to the competitive section of the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, followed by The Taste of Money (2012) in 2012. His new film Intimate Enemies will be released this summer.
KAWASE Naomi / Director, Japan
Director KAWASE Naomi caught the domestic and international spotlight with works in documentaries and feature films. In 1997, she became the youngest winner of the Camera d’Or Award in the history of Cannes Film Festival with her first featureSuzaku (1997), followed by various recognitions in 2006 at Locarno International Film Festival, Taiwan, Copenhagen, and Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival with Tarachime (2006), a documentary on her childbirth. Director KAWASE also received the Grand Prix at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival for The Mourning Forest (2007) and was invited to the competitive section of the 2014 Cannes and 2014 Busan International Film Festival with Still the Water (2014). More recently, she produced a Korean-Japanese film, A Midsummer’s Fantasia (2014) and her new film An (2015) was invited in the Un Certain Regards section of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.
Xiaoshuai WANG / Director, China
Born in 1966 in Shangai, WANG Xiaoshuai graduated from the Beijing Film Academy and is one of China’s leading Sixth Generation filmmakers. His low-budget directorial debut The Days (1993) and his acclaimed works such as Chongqing Blues and Beijing Bicycle expose the realistic dark shadows of history and the social reality drawn over the daily life of today’s Chinese society. The Days (1993) and So Close To Paradise (1998) were invited to the 4th Busan International Film Festival and received significant acclaim. Director WANG also received the Silver Bear Award at the 51st Berlin International Film Festival with Beijing Bicycle (2001), the Jury Award at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival with Shanghai Dreams (2005) and competed in the competitive section of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival with Chongqiing Blues (2010).
Apichatpong WEERASETHAKUL / Director, Thailand
Born in Thailand, Director Apichatpong WEERASETHAKUL studied cinema at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He began shooting short films in 1994 and by 2000, produced his first feature Mysterious Object At Noon (2000), selected as one of the best films in 2000 by Village Voice and Filmcomment. He also won Un Certain Regard at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival with Blissfully Yours (2002) and made 3rd place in Cahier du Cinema’s best film list of 2002. Tropical Malady (2004) received the Jury Prize at the 2004 Cannes and Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010) received the Palme d’Or in 2010. His most recent work Cemetery of Splendor (2015) was invited in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

World Cinema presents total 50 films by non-Asian masters and filmmakers. New films by European masters include Cannes Palm d’Or winner Jacques Audiard’sDheepan (France), Marco Bellocchio’s praises on the power of love in Blood of My Blood (Italy), and new works by Philippe Garrel and Arnaud Desplechin. Works commemorating the 70th year anniversary of World War II and revision matters of Auschwitz, ethnic strife and 20th century civil wars capture the curvature of the European history in cinematic creation. A total of 15 films were chosen from the US, UK, Australia and Canada. Various films will represent these countries including The Dressmaker (Australia) by Jocelyn Moorhouse who was widely acclaimed for How to Make an American Quilt, Tangerine (US) that was wellreceived at the Sundance Film Festival this year, and Regression a thriller starring Ethan Hawk and Emma Watson. Moreover, Freeheld (US) starring Julianne Moore, depicts the struggle of legalizing samesex marriage, Into the Forest (Canada) tells a story of two sisters who survived the world’s end, The 33 (US, Chile) is based on 33 mine workers who dramatically survived for 69 days after a mine collapse, and Urban Hymn (UK) depicts the process of adolescent girl’s becoming a singer. For Latin America, Mexican cinema shows its power again at the Busan International Film Festival this year. Chronic by Michel Franco, who received the Award for Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival, features the great harmony of thoughtful screenplay, cinematography and Tim Roth’s excellent performance. Embrace of the Serpent by Ciro Guerra features a novel approach by offering a stunning visual experience in a colonialist travelogue of Europe. Additionally, new work of Oliver Hermanus, The Endless River is introduced as representative work of Africa.

Y/OUR MUSIC immerses itself in the world of Thai music, from traditional music to labor songs and classical pop to urban indie music, spanning different locals and generations. As nine musicians each display their music, the rural or urban environments that influenced their sound are explored. The hands that play traditional instruments amid the red dust clouds, the labor songs being hummed in front of grains awaiting harvest, and the indie music born out of concrete basements create a melodious ecosystem. While they inhabit different musical worlds the musicians are connected by the same passion to bring their artistic aspirations to the fore and survive in the outskirts of the mainstream.
